UPDATE ON STOP & SHOP CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS IN NEW ENGLAND

With the assistance of Federal mediation, the Company and five UFCW New England Locals met over the weekend and are also meeting again today. Although we are not able to report substantial progress, we are pleased to report that the parties are once again talking about those issues that precipitated a strike last Thursday.  As with most recently negotiated contracts within our industry, the most difficult issues relate to healthcare costs, pension funding, premium rates, and new hire benefits and emoluments.

We want all of our Brothers and Sisters in New England to be assured that we view their fight as our fight as well. We stand in total solidarity and, if primary picket lines are extended into our jurisdiction, we will excercise our rights based upon the three day notice language contained in our Collective Bargaining Agreement. We emplore the Company to treat these negotiations in the most serious manner permitted, understanding that only open minded negotiations can bring this strike to a swift solution.

We will continue to keep the membership informed as to any substantial progress.
