UPDATE ON STOP & SHOP INTRODUCTION OF PREPACKAGED MEATS FROM PRESIDENT JOHN T. NICCOLLAI

UPDATE ON STOP & SHOP INTRODUCTION OF
PREPACKAGED MEATS
FROM PRESIDENT JOHN T. NICCOLLAI
SEPTEMBER 28, 2017

Your Union has been informed of the Arbitrator’s Award in the matter involving Stop & Shop and the introduction of prepackaged meats.  In a word, we are “elated” with the decision which truly embraces the protections that we needed presently and going forward.

To permit all our Brothers and Sisters to fully understand the legalese decision of the Arbitrator in layman terms, we have prepared numbered interpretations which should crystalize our protections and guarantees moving forward.

1. We were successful on all the arguments that we put forward as outlined in our update of September 21, 2017.  This includes extending the job protections to part-time members and, further, changing the date of these protections from 2003 to all those on the payroll as of June 18, 2016.

2. Most importantly, even where individuals are no longer cutting meat, the Meat Cutter rate of pay is protected and future increases will be granted over and above those Meat Cutter rates.

3. We were also successful in getting a Voluntary Buyout Program based on seniority in the amount of $1,250,000.00; providing $1,000.00 for each full year of full-time service as a Meat Manager, Meat Cutter or First Person up to a maximum of a $40,000.00 payout.

4. The job protections afforded by the Prepackaged Meat Language (no layoffs due to the introduction of prepackaged meats) shall continue into the future and even if no meat is being cut, the Company must continue to find work within the Bargaining Unit for these members at their preexisting Meat Cutter rate of pay, including future increases commensurate with the work performed.

The Arbitrator’s Award has removed much uncertainty and great economic pressure from our daily lives as Meat Cutters and Meat Department personnel with the Stop & Shop Company.  Obviously, what it could not do is guarantee continued success on the part of the Stop & Shop Company.  We, collectively, are troubled by any downturn in Meat Department sales or overall store sales.  We will continue to work hard to maintain and grow the customer base and grow sales.

Our primary obligation as a Union is to protect our Brothers and Sisters and their families.  This Arbitrator’s Award has afforded you protections never before achieved in our industry and any geographic area.  We all need to be proud of this collective accomplishment.
