Contract Update from President John T. Niccollai - 4-21-2016

Contract Update: ShopRite, Stop & Shop, King's, Foodtown, & Westchester Independents

President Niccollai reported today, the Companies and the Union have concluded two contract negotiation sessions. At the first session the Union presented the Companies with the list of contract demands collected from the membership at the meeting of the March 24, 2016. During today’s meeting (April 21, 2016), the Companies spoke of changes in our industry, especially the fact that Sunday is now the premier shopping day. The Companies also discussed the increased competition from non-union food stores, drug stores, and dollar stores.

The Union responded that our highly skilled and eminently qualified membership cannot be compared to those employees working in non-union supermarkets and dollar stores.

President Niccollai stressed the fact that a large number of food shoppers are motivated by a positive shopping experience. Our Brothers and Sisters are well versed in providing that positive shopping experience and cannot be compared to a group of wannabe’s.

The negotiations concluded with the Companies agreeing to return to the bargaining table on Thursday, May 5, 2016 with a commitment to respond to our proposals and submit, if any, the Companies' counter proposal.

We shall continue to keep the membership informed.
